What to Pack for Ladakh (and What to Leave)

After dozens of expeditions to the roof of the world, here's the gear list we actually use — and the stuff that's been sitting unused in our duffels.

What to Pack for Ladakh (and What to Leave)

Ladakh has four seasons. In a day. Usually before lunch. The trick isn't packing for weather — it's packing for rapid, unpredictable change.

Bring: a real windproof shell, merino wool base layers (two), one very warm beanie, gloves you can actually operate a camera with, and sturdy, broken-in trekking boots. Don't bring: heavy denim jeans, a 'just in case' massive winter parka, or the drone you don't know how to fly. You won't use them. We promise.

The wind off the high passes is the main character. Plan around it. Start your drives early. Eat light at high altitudes. Drink the garlic soup — the locals swear by it for a reason.
